Introduction

In recent years we have witnessed a lot of developments related to artificial intelligence (AI), such as getting driving directions, music or movie recommendations. AI is being integrated into different aspects of our lives. The Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (aidcec) is offering a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Literacy programme with the following four courses:

In the first two courses, students will learn concepts and underlying principle of AI; in the third and the fourth courses, students will be able to apply AI to solve real-world problems through individual or group projects. Details of the courses and enrollment can be found below.

Goals of Our AI Literacy Programme

  1. To promote AI literacy to the citizens
  2. To empower the citizens with AI literacy
  3. To promote ethical use of AI

Course 1: Understanding Machine Learning (9 hours)

The aidcec offers an introductory course to promote AI literacy to students at EdUHK who are curious about AI. With more understanding of AI, we will be better prepared to face the current and future AI-infused society.

Key topics covered in this course include:

  • Introduction to AI
  • Five steps of applying machine learning to solve problems
  • Supervised and unsupervised learning

You will experience activities for understanding some common techniques in the course.

This course has been offered in January – February 2021, May – June 2021, September – October 2021, September 2022. Most recently the course is offered in January 2023.

Schedule

Currently this course offers the following four options of class dates and times. Please indicate which option(s) you can participate in upon course enrollment (participating in all the following class activities is needed to complete this course). This course is adopting a flipped classroom learning approach.

Course 2: Understanding Deep Learning (9 hours)

Building upon the principles of machine learning discussed in our first course, our second course will further explore more advanced topics of artificial intelligence such as deep learning, neural network, and computer vision. Students will also have more in-depth opportunities to experience and reflect on real-world applications of artificial intelligence.

Key topics covered in this course include:

  • Further discussion on applying machine learning
  • Introduction to neural network
  • Overview of computer vision
  • Introduction to convolution neural network (CNN)

This course has been offered in March 2021, October – November 2021, January 2022, September – October 2022. Most recently the course is offered in January 2023.

Schedule

Currently this course offers the following four options of class dates and times. Please indicate which option(s) you can participate in upon course enrollment (participating in all the following class activities is needed to complete this course). This course is adopting a flipped classroom learning approach.

Course 3: Developing Artificial Intelligence Applications (14 hours)

This course is delivered in a project-based learning approach. With the knowledge of Courses 1 and 2, students will get the opportunity to apply artificial intelligence to solve real-world problems in groups with fellow classmates. Ethical considerations regarding artificial intelligence will be addressed during the project.

Key topics covered in this course include:

  • Case studies of AI applications and related ethical considerations
  • Instructions on the selected platforms for application development
  • Project development and presentation

This course has been offered in March 2021, October – November 2021, January 2022, October 2022. Most recently the course is offered in February 2023.
